DSI and Miradyne Weather Services
As part of our involvement with the
State of Maryland during the
NASA SATS
initiative, we developed a system for delivering AWOS (Automated
Weather Observation System - also ASOS -
Automated Surface Observation System) information from small airports across the state (or
any other state) to the NWS (National Weather Service), to enhance
weather-reporting capabilities and disseminate more accurate weather
information to everyone.
Most General Aviation airports have an AWOS or ASOS systems which
provides automated METAR (Aviation Routine Weather
Report) weather observation data to the local airport.
Our AWOS Service gathers this data and stores it in our Operations
Center. At configurable intervals (currently 20 minutes), the service
uploads the latest data to the NWS Data Ingest Gateway, where it is
disseminated to the various agencies that gather weather data from this
central clearinghouse.
The pilot project, using the Microsoft .Net platform, which has been
successfully operational for over a year, is now being extended to serve
the entire state of Maryland. Other states are looking into our reliable
weather delivery system as well.
As a part of this system, Miradyne also provides a user-friendly
graphic web interface for viewing METAR data. This can be viewed
here.
